Did you know that your vocal cords are made up of muscle and connective tissue? Between these cords lies the vocal gap, which is wide open when you're silent but narrows when you speak.
Sound is produced when air from your lungs passes through the vocal gap, causing the cords to vibrate. For this to happen, the cords must be tense and come together as the air passes through.
There are many reasons why you might lose your voice, ranging from infectious-inflammatory diseases of the ENT organs to spastic dystonia (overstrain of the vocal cords).
If an infection is to blame, it's crucial to see an otolaryngologist or therapist. They can prescribe anti-inflammatory and antiseptic medications and may recommend inhalations and warm drinks to soothe the mucous membrane.
Overstrain of the vocal folds is the second most common cause of voice loss, hoarseness, or huskiness. If this is the case, you need to follow strict rules:
- Maintain complete silence.
- Don't whisper! Whispering puts even more strain on your voice.
- Strictly follow the recommendations of a phoniatrist, who will prescribe a comprehensive therapy consisting of medication and physiotherapy.
By understanding how your voice works and what can cause it to disappear, you'll be better equipped to take care of your vocal health. If you do lose your voice, remember to rest it, stay hydrated, and seek medical advice if the problem persists. Your voice is a precious tool – treat it with care!
